Big skies, single-track roads, and weather that makes the landscape work for it.
The rain comes sideways and the road narrows to a single track with passing places every half mile. Somewhere between Glencoe and the Cairngorms, the landscape stops being scenery and starts being weather. Heather turns the hillsides purple in August, lochs reflect nothing because the sky is never the same twice, and the midges arrive at dusk like they have a personal grievance.
Our honest take
The Highlands are genuinely remote. Mobile signal disappears for hours, some roads require passing-place etiquette you'll learn fast, and midges from June to August are relentless near water. But the scale and silence of Glencoe at dawn or Torridon on a clear afternoon is something no amount of rain can diminish.
Why go
- The North Coast 500 route delivers sea cliffs, white-sand beaches, and empty roads in a single loop from Inverness. Drive it over 5 days minimum, not 3.
- Glencoe at first light, before the tourist buses arrive, is all moody ridgelines and geological violence. The massacre history adds weight to an already heavy place.
- Single malt whisky at the distillery where it was made. Talisker on Skye, Dalmore in the east, Glenmorangie near Tain. Tasting notes make sense when you're standing in the landscape.
Skip if you can
- Loch Ness boat tours: expensive, touristy, and the monster is still not there. The loch itself is worth seeing; just drive the shore instead.
- Ben Nevis in poor visibility. Half the summit days are cloud-whiteout with zero view. Check the mountain weather forecast at the Mountaineering Scotland site before going up.
- Eilean Donan on a July weekend afternoon: coach park full, queues at the door, castle barely visible through selfie sticks. Go early or go late.

Airport, transport, and accommodation options
Good to know
- Mountain weather changes in minutes. Always carry waterproofs, extra layers, and a map even on short walks.
- Midges are at their worst June to August near water and in still conditions. Pack a midge net and DEET-based repellent.
- Single-track roads require pulling into passing places to let oncoming traffic through. Tailgating is not how this works.
- Mobile signal is unreliable across large areas. Download offline maps on your phone before leaving towns.
