The rain comes sideways and the road narrows to a single track with passing places every half mile. Somewhere between Glencoe and the Cairngorms, the landscape stops being scenery and starts being weather. Heather turns the hillsides purple in August, lochs reflect nothing because the sky is never the same twice, and the midges arrive at dusk like they have a personal grievance.

The castle sits on volcanic rock above the city like it's daring the rest of Edinburgh to try harder. Below it, the Royal Mile drops through layers of history — close alleys branching off into courtyards where people lived ten families to a staircase for centuries. The wind smells like rain and malt from the distilleries, and the light in summer stays until 10pm, which makes the whole city feel slightly unreal.
