Great Wall of China
China
A vast defensive wall winding more than 13,000 miles along China's northern hills and ridgelines, built and rebuilt over centuries. Sections near Beijing range from fully restored stone ramparts to crumbling, overgrown 'wild wall'.
Zhangjiajie
China
The pillars rise out of cloud so thick you can't see the ground below them. Hundreds of sandstone columns, some over 200 metres tall, wrapped in sub-tropical green and half-dissolved in mist. Zhangjiajie is what happens when a landscape looks genuinely implausible. The Avatar comparison is inevitable and accurate and slightly annoying, but it doesn't stop you from staring.
