Our honest take
The Wall is incredible but choose your section carefully. Badaling is a tourist zoo. Mutianyu has a good balance. Jinshanling is the photographer's choice — fewer people, crumbling watchtowers, real atmosphere.
Why go
- Scale is impossible to grasp until you're standing on it
- Jinshanling and wild sections feel genuinely remote
- Autumn colours make October the perfect month
Skip if you can
- Badaling section — overcrowded, heavily restored, feels like a theme park
- Toboggan ride down — gimmicky and creates bottlenecks
