A vast defensive wall winding more than 13,000 miles along China's northern hills and ridgelines, built and rebuilt over centuries. Sections near Beijing range from fully restored stone ramparts to crumbling, overgrown 'wild wall'.
Our honest take
The Wall is incredible but choose your section carefully. Badaling is a tourist zoo. Mutianyu has a good balance. Jinshanling is the photographer's choice, fewer people, crumbling watchtowers, real atmosphere.
Why go
- Scale is impossible to grasp until you're standing on it
- Jinshanling and wild sections feel genuinely remote
- Autumn colours make October the perfect month
Skip if you can
- Badaling section, overcrowded, heavily restored, feels like a theme park
- Toboggan ride down, gimmicky and creates bottlenecks

- Steep, uneven steps, proper shoes essential
- Wild/unrestored sections have no guardrails
