The Zambezi falling off the edge of the world.
The mist hits you 500 metres before you see the water. Then the ground shakes, and you understand why local people call it Mosi-oa-Tunya — the smoke that thunders. The falls are a kilometre wide and drop 108 metres into a narrow gorge, and in peak flood season the spray soaks you completely before you reach the first viewpoint. It is louder than you expect and wetter than you dress for.
Our honest take
Zimbabwe side has better viewpoints — a full-length walkway through the spray. Zambia side has Devil's Pool and the rafting launch. Ideally do both with the UNIVISA ($50, covers both countries). Dry season from September to November means you can swim at the lip, but the falls shrink considerably — what you gain in access you lose in volume.
Why go
- Devil's Pool at the lip of the falls — you float metres from a 100m drop with nothing but a rock ledge between you and the gorge, best accessed Sep-Dec when water levels allow
- White-water rafting the Zambezi below the falls — Grade 5 rapids through a gorge with walls that block out the sky, one of the most technically demanding commercial rafting runs in the world
- Peak flood season (March-April) when the full kilometre-wide curtain is thundering — you cannot photograph it because the spray ruins your lens, which forces you to just stand there
Skip if you can
- Helicopter flights marketed as 'Flight of Angels' — the 12-minute version is expensive ($160+) and over before it registers; pay for the 25-minute flight or skip it
- Victoria Falls town (Zimbabwe) restaurants on Livingstone Way — overpriced tourist menus catering to day-trippers; eat on the Zambia side in Livingstone town for half the price
- Rafting in high flood season (Feb-May) — most operators suspend Grade 5 runs when water is dangerously high; don't book before checking current conditions

Airport, transport, and accommodation options
Good to know
- Malaria is present year-round — take prophylaxis and use repellent after dark
- Mugging has been reported on the footpaths between Victoria Falls town centre and the park gate — take a taxi after dark
- Baboons at the viewpoints will snatch food, bags, and sunglasses — keep everything secured
- Swimming in the Zambezi above the falls is heavily discouraged — currents are deceptive and crocodiles are present
