You come around a bend on the E10 and the road just ends at water, with jagged peaks rising straight out of the fjord like someone snapped them off and forgot to smooth the edges. The fishing villages — red and yellow wooden rorbu cabins on stilts — look like a painting someone was careless enough to make real. In winter, the northern lights occasionally flood the whole thing in green.

The water is so still in the morning that the cliffs above are perfectly doubled below the surface — you're looking at 1000 metres of rock and its reflection simultaneously. Small wooden villages cling to the shoreline like they're holding on for dear life, the ferry horn echoes for thirty seconds between walls of stone, and the clouds sit low enough that waterfalls appear to fall from nowhere.
