Rust-red dunes, cold nights, and a silence you won't find anywhere else.
At 4am the cold wakes you before the alarm does. You climb a dune in the dark and by the time the sky turns orange the silence is so complete you can hear your own pulse. The Moroccan Sahara — centred around Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes — is nothing like the endless flat wasteland people picture. The dunes are enormous, rust-coloured, and they shift overnight into new shapes.
Our honest take
The desert itself is genuinely extraordinary — the dunes at Erg Chebbi are 150 metres high and the night sky is ridiculous. The downside: the camel camp industry is saturated with near-identical luxury bivouac tents, and touts in Merzouga village are relentless. Booking through a Marrakech-based operator rather than on arrival saves both money and stress.
Why go
- Sunrise from the top of Erg Chebbi — a 40-minute dune climb in the dark that ends with the entire Sahara turning gold below you
- The drive from Ouarzazate through the Draa Valley is as much the destination as the dunes — kasbahs, palmeries, and dry riverbeds for 200km
- A night in a desert bivouac away from the main camp clusters — no generators, no phone signal, stars so dense the sky looks wrong
Skip if you can
- Luxury 'glamping' tents with air conditioning in July or August — outside the tent it's 48°C, the experience is essentially staying in a beige room
- The camel ride itself if you have back problems — an hour on a dromedary in the midday sun is not comfortable for anyone; do it at dawn or dusk only
- Erg Chigaga near M'Hamid if you're time-limited — it's more remote and less crowded but requires a full extra day of travel from Marrakech

Costs
Overnight camel trek + standard bivouac: 400-700 MAD ($40-70). Dinner at a desert camp: usually included. 4x4 half-day excursion: 300-500 MAD ($30-50). Merzouga guesthouse: 150-300 MAD ($15-30/night).
Airport, transport, and accommodation options
Good to know
- Temperatures swing 25°C between midday and 3am — a fleece or light jacket is not optional even in April
- Drink 3-4 litres of water per day; dehydration sets in faster than you expect in dry desert air
- Sandstorms (chergui winds) can arrive with almost no warning — if sky turns yellow-brown, get into a building or vehicle
- Touts near the dunes can be persistent; a firm but polite 'la shukran' (no thank you) repeated once is more effective than engaging
