A marine iguana sneezes salt water on your shoe and then ignores you completely. That is the Galapagos in a sentence. Animals here have no fear of humans, which means a blue-footed booby will land a metre away and go about its business while you stare. The islands are volcanic, raw, and not particularly beautiful in a conventional sense. The wildlife is the landscape.
Our honest take
The Galapagos is extraordinary and expensive and tightly controlled. Land-based trips save money but you miss the outer islands where the best wildlife is. A cruise, even a basic one, covers more ground in a week than island-hopping does in two. The national park rules are strict and that is exactly why it still works.
Why go
- Snorkelling with Galapagos sea lions. They spiral around you, bite your fins, and treat the whole thing as a game.
- Giant tortoises in the wild at Charles Darwin Research Station and in the highlands of Santa Cruz, some over 100 years old and the size of a small car
- Whale shark aggregations around Darwin and Wolf Islands from July to October, the largest recorded concentrations on the planet
Skip if you can
- Purely land-based island-hopping on a tight budget. Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz becomes your whole trip and the outer islands, where the wildest encounters happen, stay out of reach.
- Last-minute cruise deals from Puerto Ayora agencies. They exist, but you burn 2-3 days waiting in a town that is not why you came.
- Eating in tourist restaurants on Isabela's main strip. Overpriced and mediocre. Find the local comedores two streets back.

Costs
National park entrance fee: $200 per person (paid on arrival, cash or card). Inter-island ferry: $30-35 one way. Budget cruise berths start around $2500 for 8 days.

Good to know
- Stay on marked trails at all times. Wardens patrol and fines are real.
- Do not touch wildlife under any circumstances. Not even if an animal comes to you.
- Sun intensity at the equator is severe even on overcast days. Reef-safe sunscreen only (oil-based sunscreen is prohibited in marine areas).
- Seasickness is common on inter-island speedboats. The swell between islands can be rough, especially in June and July. Bring medication.
