Granite walls so tall they change your sense of scale permanently.
El Capitan appears before you're ready for it, a vertical mile of grey granite filling the windshield as you round the tunnel bend into Yosemite Valley. The scale is disorienting in the best way. Waterfalls thread down sheer walls, black bears wander through campgrounds with professional indifference, and at dusk the valley floor goes golden in a way that makes people stop mid-sentence.
Our honest take
Yosemite Valley in July is a traffic jam with waterfalls. The park is genuinely extraordinary but the crowds are genuinely exhausting. Go in May for full falls and wildflowers, or September for golden light and breathing room. Half Dome permits are a lottery. Plan months out or plan around it.
Why go
- Yosemite Falls in May carries snowmelt from 2,425 feet of drop, loud enough to feel in your chest from the valley floor
- The view from Glacier Point at sunset puts Half Dome, the valley, and Nevada Falls in a single frame that stops feeling real
- Black bears in camp are a genuine evening ritual. Watching a 300-pound animal test every car door methodically is unforgettable in the most practical sense
Skip if you can
- Yosemite Valley Lodge restaurant: overpriced cafeteria food surrounded by people who drove four hours and are now deeply disappointed. Bring your own food or eat in Curry Village.
- Half Dome without booking the permit months in advance. The cable route requires a permit and people get turned back at the base.
- The valley floor in July between 11am and 4pm. It's a parking lot. Hike early or drive out to Tuolumne Meadows instead.

Park entry: $35/vehicle (7-day pass). Campsite: $26-36/night. In-park lodge rooms: $160-350/night. Grocery run in Yosemite Village: about 30% more expensive than outside.
Airport, transport, and accommodation options
Good to know
- Food storage is mandatory. Bear boxes are everywhere. One unattended granola bar will total a car window.
- Altitude at Tuolumne Meadows is 8,600 feet. Acclimatize before hard hikes if coming from sea level.
- Slippery granite near waterfalls kills people every year. Respect the barriers, wear grip shoes.
- Reservation system for valley entry is active during peak season. Check nps.gov before you arrive or you will be turned away at the gate.
