New York City
United States, North America
Eight million stories happening simultaneously on a grid of concrete and ambition.
The largest city in the United States, a dense, fast-moving collection of distinct neighbourhoods across five boroughs. Home to landmark skylines, major museums, Broadway theatre, and food from every corner of the globe.
Our honest take
NYC is exhausting, expensive, and absolutely worth it. But don't do the tourist checklist, skip Times Square, eat in Queens, walk the Brooklyn Bridge at sunrise, and find a jazz club in the Village. The city rewards curiosity over itineraries.
Why go
- Cultural density is unmatched, world-class art, food, music, theatre in one subway ride
- Every neighbourhood is a different city
- The energy is real, you feel it walking down any block
Skip if you can
- Times Square, sensory assault with nothing to actually do
- Statue of Liberty crown tickets, the ferry view is better and free from Staten Island Ferry
- Chain restaurants anywhere in Manhattan, the city has 27,000 restaurants, eat local
Things to do
Where locals eat
Thin-crust New York fold-in-half pizza, the baseline test of any pizzeria
Joe Pizza in Greenwich Village or Di Fara in Midwood (worth the trek), avoid Times Square shops
Ground beef chopped on a griddle with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato on a hero roll. Harlem bodega classic
Blue Sky Deli (the original, E 110th St) or any Bronx/Harlem bodega with a griddle
Chewy boiled bagel with cream cheese, smoked salmon, capers, red onion. Sunday morning ritual
Russ and Daughters on Houston St (since 1914) or Absolute Bagels on Upper West Side
Yellow-spiced chicken, rice, white sauce, hot sauce, the 53rd and 6th late-night legend
The Halal Guys (53rd and 6th original cart, not the franchise locations) after 10pm
Costs
Per person, per day on the ground, lodging, food, local transport and activities. Excludes international flights (see Getting there).
Subway: $34/week unlimited ($3/ride). Broadway: $80-250. Museum: $25-30 (some pay-what-you-wish).
Getting there
Where to stay
Near 9/11 Memorial, Brooklyn Bridge, quieter at night
Central, near Broadway, tourist-heavy
Hip, great food, 1 subway stop to Manhattan
Skyline views, cheaper, 10min to Midtown
Good to know
- Subway is safe but stay alert late at night
- Pickpockets in Times Square and crowded trains
- Jaywalking is normal but watch for bikes in lanes
- Tip 18-20% at restaurants, $1-2/drink at bars
