Our honest take
Photos genuinely do not prepare you for the scale. The South Rim is open year-round and has the classic views; the North Rim is higher, cooler, and far quieter but closed in winter. Even a short walk below the rim transforms the experience, but never try to hike to the river and back in one day.
Why go
- The first look over the rim is a jaw-on-the-floor moment
- Sunrise and sunset set the layered rock on fire with colour
- Below-rim trails quickly leave the crowds behind
Skip if you can
- Attempting rim-to-river-to-rim in a single day, rangers rescue people who try
- Rushing a day trip from Las Vegas, you'll spend more time driving than looking

Good to know
- Never attempt to hike to the river and back in one day
- Carry far more water than you think, the dry heat is deceptive
- Stay behind railings; rim edges are unfenced in many spots
- Summer below-rim temperatures can exceed 38°C (100°F)
