Two million animals crossing an endless plain — nature's greatest show.

One of Africa's greatest wildlife sanctuaries, the Serengeti is home to the world's largest terrestrial mammal migration. Over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras thunder across the plains each year in a dramatic cycle of life.

Our honest take

The Serengeti is a once-in-a-lifetime experience but it's not cheap and it's not comfortable. Budget safaris exist but you get what you pay for — a good guide makes the difference between 'we saw some zebras' and 'we watched a lion hunt at dawn.' Splurge on the guide, save on the lodge.

Why go

  • The Great Migration is the most spectacular wildlife event on Earth
  • Big Five sightings are almost guaranteed with a good guide
  • Hot air balloon over the plains at sunrise is unforgettable

Skip if you can

  • Ultra-budget camping safaris — exhausting, cold at night, minimal wildlife knowledge
  • Expecting National Geographic moments on day one — patience is required
  • Ngorongoro Crater on a Sunday — packed with vehicles

Things to do

  • Safari game drives
  • Hot air balloon rides
  • Bush walks
  • Wildlife photography
