The train from Kandy to Ella rattles through tea estates so green they look painted, with Tamil women in bright saris moving between the rows. You smell cloves before you reach Galle. The south coast beaches have warm water and no current warnings, the ancient cities rise out of flat jungle with no obvious reason for being there, and everything is slightly chaotic in a way that keeps you alert.
