Our honest take

Kruger is the rare park where you drive yourself — no mandatory guide, no expensive operator markup. That freedom is the whole appeal. The downside: southern Kruger around Skukuza gets genuinely crowded in July-August school holidays, and the main tar roads can feel like wildlife theme parks. Go north of Olifants for space.

Why go

• Self-drive means you set your own pace — linger at a leopard sighting for two hours if you want, no guide tapping his watch
• The southern river roads along the Sabie and Crocodile rivers are among the most reliable Big Five corridors on the continent
• Night drives from rest camps put you on roads you can't access alone — rangers find creatures the day crowd misses entirely

Skip if you can

• Skukuza in late July — South African school holidays turn the area into gridlock, sightings become 30-car pile-ons
• Driving after 6pm on your own without a night drive permit — illegal, and the gates close hard at sunset
• The private reserve lodges along the western boundary if your budget is tight — they're a different product at $600-1500 per night; Kruger's own rest camps deliver 90% of the experience at 15% of the cost

Costs

Park conservation fee: R440/day (~$24) for international visitors. SANParks hut/chalet: R900-2200/night (~$50-120). Hire car from MQP: R600-900/day (~$33-49). Night drive: R350-450/person (~$19-25).

Good to know

• Never exit your vehicle anywhere except designated picnic sites and rest camps — this is not a rule people bend
• Malaria is present year-round in Kruger — take prophylaxis and use repellent at dawn and dusk
• Book SANParks accommodation 11 months in advance for peak season; the system opens at midnight and popular camps sell out within hours
• Fuel up at every rest camp — distances are large and petrol stations are not frequent in the north
