A 15th-century Incan citadel perched on a ridge high in the Peruvian Andes, above the Sacred Valley. Abandoned for centuries and wrapped in cloud forest, its mortar-free stone walls and terraces remain remarkably intact.
Our honest take
Absolutely worth the effort — but book months ahead, go in dry season, and skip the overcrowded morning slot. The 2pm entry is quieter and the light is better for photos.
Why go
- One of the few ancient sites that genuinely takes your breath away
- The Inca Trail is a bucket-list trek with stunning scenery
- Altitude and remoteness keep it feeling wild despite the crowds
Skip if you can
- The tourist train from Cusco — overpriced for what it is; take the colectivo to Ollantaytambo instead
- Guided tours that rush you through in 2 hours — you need at least half a day
