New Zealand's largest national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of breathtaking fjords, ancient rainforests, and cascading waterfalls. Milford Sound, carved by glaciers over millions of years, is often called the eighth wonder of the world.
Our honest take
Milford Sound is often called the eighth wonder of the world, and on a rainy day (which is most days), it's even better because hundreds of waterfalls appear. Doubtful Sound is quieter and wilder. The Milford Track is the best multi-day hike in NZ but books out a year ahead.
Why go
- Milford Sound in rain is actually the best time, waterfalls cascade from every cliff
- Doubtful Sound has dolphins, penguins, and almost no other boats
- Milford Track is consistently rated one of the world's best hikes
Skip if you can
- Large cruise boats in Milford Sound, take a small vessel or kayak instead
- Day-tripping from Queenstown, the 4h drive each way is exhausting; stay overnight
- Expecting sunshine. Fiordland gets 7+ metres of rain per year; embrace it

Good to know
- Sandflies are brutal, bring strong repellent (DEET or Picaridin)
- Milford Road can close without warning (avalanche, flooding)
