A compact canal-laced city where 17th-century merchant houses lean over waterways, world-class museums sit minutes apart, and locals move through it all on bicycles rather than cars.
Our honest take
Amsterdam delivers on nearly every front, art, food, architecture, nightlife, but the city centre can feel overrun with stag parties and tourist traps if you stick to the obvious streets. Step one block off the main drags and you find quiet courtyards, local brown cafes, and bakeries that haven't changed in decades. Timed-entry tickets for the big museums are non-negotiable; skip this and you'll waste half a day in queues. Budget-wise it's expensive but not London-expensive, and the compact size means you'll rarely need transport beyond your own two feet (or a rented bike).
Why go
- One of Europe's most walkable cities, the entire centre fits in a 3km radius
- Three world-class museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Stedelijk) within 200 metres of each other
- The canal ring at golden hour is genuinely as good as the photos suggest
Skip if you can
- The Red Light District tourist circuit, fine to walk through once, but the 'tours' are overpriced and exploitative
- I Amsterdam sign letters, removed from Museumplein, the copies elsewhere are pure selfie bait
- Bulldog coffee shops, tourist-oriented chains with mediocre product and inflated prices

Where locals eat
Deep-fried crispy balls filled with beef ragout, served with mustard at every brown cafe
Cafe t Smalle on Egelantiersgracht (17th century bar) or any brown cafe after 5pm
Two thin waffles sandwiching caramel syrup, warm from a market stall, not the packaged version
Albert Cuyp Market (the stall with the longest queue), eat immediately while the caramel drips
Fresh herring fillet with chopped onion and pickles, eaten by tilting your head back and lowering it in
Frens Haringhandel near Dam Square or Vis Plaza at Albert Cuyp Market

Museum cards (Museumkaart, I amsterdam City Card) save money if hitting 3+ museums. Eating out is pricey, markets and takeaway Indonesian/Surinamese food are the budget hack.

Where to stay
Charming canal-side streets, local shops, quiet at night. Best neighbourhood for a first visit.
Lively multicultural area around Albert Cuyp market. Slightly cheaper, great food scene.
Most central but noisiest. Convenient for museums but tourist-heavy after dark.
Good to know
- Very safe city overall, main risks are bicycle theft and pickpockets in crowded tourist areas
- Watch for bikes when stepping off trams or crossing cycle lanes, locals ride fast and won't stop
- Tap water is excellent; no need to buy bottled
