Japan's ancient imperial capital is a city of extraordinary temples, traditional wooden machiya townhouses, and meticulously maintained Zen gardens. With over 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, Kyoto is the spiritual heart of Japan.
Our honest take
Kyoto is Japan at its most refined. But it's also extremely popular — Fushimi Inari at 10am is a queue, not a spiritual experience. Go at 6am or after 5pm. Rent a bike, explore the less-famous temples (Tofuku-ji, Daitoku-ji), and book a real tea ceremony, not a tourist one.
