One building, four centuries old, that still makes people cry.
You walk through a red sandstone gateway, past hawkers and security checks, and then it's just there — white marble framed by dark cypress trees, reflected in a long pool that never seems to ripple. It's smaller than you expect from the photos but the detail is overwhelming: semi-precious stones inlaid petal by petal, calligraphy carved so fine it looks printed. The colour shifts through the day — pinkish at dawn, blazing white at noon, golden at sunset. Agra around it is chaotic and charmless, which somehow makes the Taj more startling. One building, built for grief, that stops traffic 400 years later.
Our honest take
Yes, it lives up to the hype — the marble genuinely glows at sunrise and the inlay work is finer than any photo captures. But Agra is rough: aggressive touts at every gate, pollution haze most afternoons, and nothing else worth staying for beyond Agra Fort. See the Taj at opening (6am), hit Agra Fort by 9am, and catch the afternoon train to Jaipur. Don't linger.
Why go
- One of the very few places that's actually better in person than in photographs
- Sunrise entry — gates open at 6am, the marble turns pink, and for 20 minutes it's almost quiet
- Pairs naturally with the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur Golden Triangle (most do all three in 5-6 days)
Skip if you can
- Staying more than one night in Agra — there's genuinely nothing else here worth a second day
- The moonlight viewing programme — you're kept far back behind a rope, the Taj is a pale smudge, not worth the hassle
- Guides who approach outside the gate — book through your hotel or go without
