Santorini
Greece, Europe
Volcanic cliffs, white-washed villages, and sunsets that stop conversations.
A Greek island in the southern Aegean, shaped by an ancient volcanic eruption that left a deep caldera ringed by cliffs. Whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches, and clifftop sunsets define its towns of Oia and Fira.
Our honest take
Santorini is gorgeous and you should go — but not in July-August unless you enjoy paying €8 for water and queueing 40 minutes for an Instagram photo. Late May or early October: half the crowd, same views, better prices.
Why go
- The caldera views are genuinely unlike anywhere else on Earth
- Wine from volcanic soil is unique and excellent
- Akrotiri ruins are a mini-Pompeii most tourists skip
Skip if you can
- Oia at sunset in peak season — sardine-packed, aggressive selfie sticks
- Cruise ship days (check schedules) — 10,000 extra people flood the island
Things to do
- Sunset watching
- Beach hopping
- Wine tours
- Boat cruises
Where locals eat
Crispy fried tomato fritters made with Santorini cherry tomatoes, onion, and mint
Melenio in Oia or any taverna using the local cherry tomatoes (ask if they're Santorinian)
Yellow split pea puree drizzled with olive oil and capers — Santorini's signature appetizer
Metaxy Mas in Exo Gonia (reservation needed) or Lucky's Souvlaki in Fira for cheap eats
Charred tentacles with lemon and olive oil, hung to dry outside every seafood taverna
Ammoudi Bay below Oia — walk down the 300 steps, eat at Sunset Taverna right on the water
Santorini's unique white eggplant, grilled or in a spread — sweeter and less bitter than purple
Selene restaurant (fine dining) or Naoussa taverna in Fira for a casual plate
Costs
Caldera hotels: €200-800/night. Beach hotels: €60-150. Meals: €15-40.
Airport, transport, and accommodation options
Good to know
- Steep cliff paths with no railings in places
- Donkey rides to the port are animal cruelty — take the cable car
- Sunburn is severe — the white buildings reflect UV
- Rent ATVs only if experienced — roads are narrow and tourists drive badly
