Granite, wind, and a glacier that calves ice into grey water.
The granite towers appear through cloud and then disappear again, which is most of what Patagonia does to you. Wind here isn't weather, it's physics: a sustained horizontal force that leans you sideways on ridge trails and rips tent stakes from the ground. The park is raw in a way that feels less like scenery and more like a reminder that you are small and the mountains do not care.
Our honest take
The W Trek is one of the great multi-day hikes, but the infrastructure has caught up with the reputation. Refugios are crowded, expensive, and booked out months in advance. Weather can ruin a full day's hiking without warning. Go in November or late February to avoid the worst of the January crowds.
Why go
- The Base of the Towers at sunrise after the 2.5-hour pre-dawn scramble: a cirque lake with three sheer granite towers turning orange, which lasts maybe twenty minutes before cloud moves in
- Grey Glacier is the size of a city and drops ice chunks into the lake directly in front of you; the kayak route gets close enough to hear it crack
- The O Circuit takes you to the back side of the massif where almost nobody goes, with campsites that feel genuinely remote
Skip if you can
- EcoCamp and similar luxury dome camps unless budget is no object: the price-to-experience ratio is poor when the same views are accessible from half-price refugios
- Booking the W Trek in January without reservations made months ahead. You will arrive to full refugios and no tent space.
- Rushing it in 3 days. The weather will take at least one day from you and you need buffer.

Costs
Park entry: 21,000 CLP (~$23) low season, 38,000 CLP (~$42) high season. Refugio dorm: 50,000-75,000 CLP ($55-83)/night. Camp site: 12,000-20,000 CLP ($13-22)/night. Bus Puerto Natales to park: 5,000 CLP ($5.50).
Airport, transport, and accommodation options
Good to know
- Wind gusts above 100km/h are common and can knock you off a trail. Check the forecast daily and do not push through exposed ridges in high wind.
- Hypothermia risk is real even in summer. Carry waterproof layers regardless of morning sunshine.
- Register your trek plan at the park entrance. Trails are well-marked but conditions change fast.
- Pumas are present in the park. They rarely approach humans but do not hike alone in the pre-dawn dark without a group.
