Glaciers, improbable lakes, and roads that go nowhere fast.
You round a bend on the Icefields Parkway and the road just stops making sense. A glacier hangs off a cliff that shouldn't exist, a lake sits below it in a colour that has no business being that blue, and there are no buildings, no towns, nothing. The Canadian Rockies operate at a scale that makes most other mountain ranges feel like suggestions. The elk near Jasper townsite don't flinch when you slow down.
Our honest take
The Canadian Rockies are genuinely worth the expense and the crowds. July and August bring gridlock at Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. September is better in almost every way: golden larches, fewer people, cheaper rates, elk in rut. You need a car. Budget more time than you think. The distances are deceptive on a map.
Why go
- The Icefields Parkway is 230 kilometres with a glacier, a waterfall, or a pullout worth stopping at roughly every 20 minutes. Budget a full day, not a half.
- Larch season in late September turns the trails around Larch Valley and Lake O'Hara into something from a different planet. Yellow trees against grey rock and blue water.
- Wildlife is not a marketing claim. Black bears and grizzlies appear on roadsides regularly in summer, mountain goats occupy ridgelines above Jasper, and wolf sightings happen near Kootenay.
Skip if you can
- Columbia Icefield Skywalk if you're on a budget. $32 CAD for a glass-floored walkway over a valley. The view from the free parking lot is nearly identical.
- Banff Avenue in July between 10am and 5pm. It's a traffic jam with fudge shops. Go early or eat elsewhere.
- The Athabasca Glacier Ice Explorer bus tour unless mobility requires it. You step off a bus, stand on ice for ten minutes, and board again. The hike to the toe of the glacier is free and takes 45 minutes.

Costs
Parks Canada day pass: CAD $11/person or $72/year Discovery Pass (worth it for 7+ days). Hotel rooms in Banff: CAD $250-600/night in peak summer. Meal in Banff: CAD $25-40 per person for a sit-down lunch. Gas along Icefields Parkway is sparse: fill up in Banff or Jasper.
Airport, transport, and accommodation options
Good to know
- Bear spray is not optional on backcountry trails. Rent or buy at any outdoor shop in Banff or Jasper. Know how to use it before you start hiking.
- Snow can fall any month at elevation. The Parkway closes briefly in storms. Check Parks Canada road conditions before leaving.
- Wildlife jams cause rear-end collisions every summer. Pull completely off the road, not halfway. Keep 30m from wolves and bears, 100m from bears with cubs.
- Cell coverage disappears between Banff and Jasper on the Parkway. Download offline maps and tell someone your itinerary.
