The water really is that colour — an impossible turquoise that looks photoshopped until you're standing at the edge of Lake Louise watching glacial silt catch the morning light. Banff is the Canadian Rockies compressed into a national park: valleys that dead-end at blue-white glaciers, elk wandering through town like they pay rent, and a two-lane highway (the Icefields Parkway) that might be the best drive on the continent. The town itself is touristy and expensive — $9 craft beers, souvenir shops selling moose plush toys — but step onto any trailhead and within 20 minutes you're alone with mountains that make you feel appropriately small.
Our honest take
The scenery is worth every dollar — and you will spend many dollars. Banff town is overpriced and overcrowded in July-August (Lake Louise parking fills by 6:30am, not a joke). September is the cheat code: golden larch season, half the crowds, same views, cheaper hotels. Drive the Icefields Parkway to Jasper even if you do nothing else. Rent a car; the bus system won't cut it.
Why go
- Moraine Lake at 7am before the buses arrive — the colour is almost violent, and you'll have 10 minutes of quiet
- The Icefields Parkway is 230km of glaciers, waterfalls, and pullouts where you just stand there with your mouth open
- Wildlife is not hypothetical — elk in town, bears on trails, mountain goats on ridgelines. You will see something.
Skip if you can
- Banff Avenue souvenir shops — identical maple-syrup-and-moose-plush stores for 6 blocks
- The Sulphur Mountain gondola if you can hike — same summit, free, better workout, 90 minutes up
- Trying to park at Lake Louise after 7am in July — take the shuttle or accept defeat
