Seventy-four islands, one beach that doesn't need a filter.
The sand at Whitehaven Beach is 98% pure silica. It squeaks underfoot and stays cool in direct sun, which sounds like a trivial fact until you're standing on it at low tide watching the tidal swirl of Hill Inlet from above. The Whitsundays are 74 islands in the Coral Sea, most uninhabited, most accessible only by boat or seaplane. The reef here is battered but still alive.
Our honest take
The Whitsundays live up to the photos, which is rare. But it's expensive and the reef is visibly degraded from bleaching events. If you're chasing world-class snorkelling, the Coral Sea here won't match your expectations. Come for the sailing, the sand, and the landscape from the air.
Why go
- Hill Inlet at low tide: the tidal swirl of white sand and turquoise water shifts every hour and looks different from every angle on the lookout walk
- Bare boat charter lets you skipper a yacht between islands with no sailing experience required, sleeping on deck under stars between anchorages
- A 30-minute seaplane flight over Heart Reef and the outer Whitsundays gives a sense of the archipelago's scale that no boat trip matches
Skip if you can
- Day-trip snorkel cruises promising 'pristine reef': the inner reef around the Whitsundays has suffered repeated bleaching events and many coral structures are dead. Go for the scenery, not the underwater world.
- Airlie Beach nightlife on a Friday. The main strip is a package-holiday mess of sports bars and sunburned 20-year-olds. Fine if that's your thing, but it has nothing to do with why you're here.
- Whitehaven Beach on a crowded summer day without an early start. The beach is long enough to escape the tour groups, but arrive mid-morning in January and the inlet lookout platform gets packed.

Good to know
- Box jellyfish and Irukandji are present from October to May. Wear a stinger suit for any swimming in those months. Provided on most tours, but ask.
- The sun at this latitude is severe. SPF 50+, rashies, and reapplication every 90 minutes on the water. Sunburn here escalates quickly.
- If bare-boat chartering, complete the required boat briefing seriously. The channels between islands have real currents and shallow coral reefs.
- Cyclone season runs November to April. Travel insurance is not optional; cyclone Debbie in 2017 caused major damage. Check forecasts.
