Laneways, flat whites, and a city that argues about everything.

The coffee arrives before you've sat down properly, and the person who made it will have opinions about the bean origin. Melbourne runs on ritual: morning flat whites in laneways painted floor-to-ceiling by people who got paid nothing, lunch at a Vietnamese place in Footscray that seats twelve, footy on the weekend. It's the city Australians move to when Sydney starts feeling shallow.

Our honest take

Melbourne is genuinely one of the world's great food and culture cities, but it's expensive and the weather will betray you. Four seasons in a day is not a cliche here; it's a Tuesday. The laneway culture is real and worth your time. The tourist waterfront at Southbank is not.

Why go

  • The coffee culture is not hype. Melbourne trained the world to expect better espresso, and every neighbourhood has three cafes worth going out of your way for.
  • An AFL match at the MCG with 80,000 people is a tribal experience unlike anything else in Australian sport, especially a finals game in September.
  • Fitzroy and Collingwood on a Saturday: independent bookshops, vinyl stores, Tamil lunch spots, and street art that changes every few weeks.

Skip if you can

  • Southbank restaurant strip: tourist-priced, average food, mediocre views. Walk ten minutes inland for the same money spent better.
  • Melbourne Star Observation Wheel: closed since 2021 and a reminder to check what's actually operating before you plan around it.
  • Driving in the CBD. Hook turns are real, tram tracks will catch your tyres, and parking costs $60 a day. Take the tram.

Things to do

  • Laneway cafe-hopping
  • AFL match at the MCG
  • Day trip to the Dandenong Ranges
  • Exploring Fitzroy and Collingwood galleries

Airport, transport, and accommodation options

Good to know

  • Melbourne is generally very safe. CBD late nights around Flinders Lane can be rowdy on weekends; nothing unusual for a large city.
  • Weather changes fast and dramatically. Carry a light layer regardless of the morning forecast.
  • Sun exposure is serious. UV index regularly hits 11+ in summer. Sunscreen is not optional.
  • Tram tracks are a genuine hazard for cyclists. Ride parallel to them, never across them at a shallow angle.
