You put your face in the water and the noise of the boat disappears. Below, a coral garden in colours that have no business existing: parrotfish grinding away at staghorn coral, a reef shark doing slow laps, a turtle ignoring you completely. The Great Barrier Reef is 2,300km of ocean ecosystem seen mostly from the surface, which is both humbling and, in the bleached sections, quietly devastating.
Our honest take
Go to the outer reef, not the inner. Coral bleaching has hit the inshore sections hard, and a day trip to the inner reef can be genuinely disappointing. Divers get significantly more than snorkellers. Liveaboards reach the remote ribbon reefs where the reef still looks like a nature documentary. Budget trips cut corners on site selection.
Why go
- Outer reef liveaboards from Cairns reach Cod Hole and the Ribbon Reefs, where potato cod the size of labradors swim up to inspect you at arm's length
- Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays is silica sand so fine it squeaks underfoot, and the swirling tidal flats at Hill Inlet are unlike anything else on the coast
- Lady Elliot Island sits at the southern tip of the reef with manta rays year-round and nesting turtles from November to March, no day-tripper crowds
Skip if you can
- Inner reef day trips from Cairns marketed at budget travellers: Green Island and Fitzroy Island have heavily degraded coral from bleaching events, warm water, and too many boats. You may come away underwhelmed.
- Seastar cruises that promise the reef in 20 minutes from Airlie Beach. The Whitsundays are islands, not reef. Know which one you're buying.
- Semi-submarine tours marketed as reef experiences: watching coral through a scratched porthole is not the same thing as being in the water.

Airport, transport, and accommodation options
Good to know
- Box jellyfish and Irukandji are present in nearshore waters October to May. Wear a full stinger suit. Most operators provide them.
- Sun exposure on the water is severe. SPF50+, shirt, hat. Reef-safe sunscreen only (zinc-based) to protect coral.
- Cyclone season runs November to April. Travel insurance with cancellation cover is essential.
- Decompression sickness is a real risk on multi-dive days. Follow your dive master's advice on surface intervals and depth limits.
